Measuring the Pants to Know Your Size
This is the simplest and most effective option. In this method, the waist is measured by placing a tape measure on the upper edge of the pants, measuring from left to right. To know the length, the tape measure must be located in the inner seam and measured from the waist to the bottom edge of it.
How to Find Out Your Pants Size by Measuring Your Hip?
Unlike jeans, the waist measurement is not usually listed on the pants size tag. This leaves some women wondering exactly what size to buy when it’s time to update their wardrobe or where to start.
If you are not using a catalog size chart, there may be a difference in the exact size. Also, sizing varies from designer to designer. But there are some basic guidelines you can use to determine your approximate size range in the US sizing system. Follow the steps below to measure your hip size:
- Stand in front of a full-length mirror and locate your natural waistline by finding the narrowest part of your torso. This is usually located on the same level as your belly button. If there is no definition of the waist (no obvious indentation), use the location of the navel as a general guide.
You can wrap a piece of string around your waist if you wish. Bend the rope on each side and it should flow naturally to your waist.
- Stand up straight and exhale gently. Use the tape measure against your body. Measure your waist, keeping the tape flat around your entire waist. If you used the string method to locate your waist, measure above the string, even if it’s not completely straight. The number that intersects the “0” on the tape measure is your waist measurement.
- Write down this number. For these instructions, the number 32 inches (81 cm) will be used, which according to Medical News Today, is the average waist size for American women ages 18 to 25.
- Stand with your feet together, wearing only your underwear. Measure your hips and buttocks in the largest section. The number that intersects the zero on the measuring tape is the hip or “low hip” measurement.
- Write your hip measurement.
- Find your waist to hip ratio by dividing your waist measurement by your hip measurement. Write down this number. This will be useful only in case the ratio is greater than 0.8.
- Find your size in a catalog table. Find your waist measurement and look up the corresponding size. For example, according to the tool on the SizeWize website, a 32-inch (81-cm) waist is a size 12 in most stores and catalogs. Please note that due to design differences, you can go as low as 8/10 and as high as 12/14.
- If your waist is greater or less than 32 (81 cm), go up or down accordingly. For example, 31 inches (78.5 cm) would be a size 10, while 33 inches (83.5 cm) would be a size 14, etc.
- If your waist-to-hip ratio is greater than 0.8, consider going up one size in the chart to accommodate a wider hip, even though your waist is smaller.
What are the pants sizes in all countries?
With this pants size chart, you will be able to know the equivalence of the size used in any country in the world.
It is worth remembering that some European countries do not have a specific country size for pants and use general European sizing. The same goes for “international” sizing, which is a common standard measurement used in some garments such as pants, and in this case, they are also included in the tables. Therefore, if a garment does not have a size for a specific country on the label, the international or European size must be used.

Some brands of clothing may have a special measurement for pants different from the one normally used. This is something that does not happen very often and if it does, the equivalence of that size in other countries is indicated on the clothing label.
